Alabama Rivers Alliance Programs

by Netcorps Admin last modified May 12, 2009 04:01 PM

The mission of the Alabama Rivers Alliance is to protect and restore state rivers through water quality and quantity policy advocacy, restoration planning, grassroots organizing, and watershed education in order to achieve clean and healthy watershed ecosystems, healthy people, strong economies, and a functioning democratic system of government in Alabama.

The Rivers Alliance works to achieve its mission through three programs:

Cahaba Lilly

Through its Healthy Watersheds Program the Rivers Alliance seeks the protection and restoration of Alabama’s watersheds to achieve improved water quality. This is accomplished through the application of existing watershed conservation policies as well as the creation, advancement, and implementation of necessary policy reforms and stream restoration planning. The Rivers Alliance also serves as a watchdog and advocate for Alabama’s rivers at the local, state, and national levels.

Through its Flowing Waters Program the Rivers Alliance promotes natural flow regimes in order to ensure healthy ecosystems. The Alliance strongly believes that water is a precious resource that must be shared wisely by upstream, downstream, and in-stream stakeholders. The Alliance seeks to protect and restore water quantity through sustainable water supplies, water withdrawal policies, in-stream flow policies, and improvement of hydropower and non-hydropower dam operations.

Through its Watershed Leadership Program the Rivers Alliance works to grow the capacity of Alabama citizens to protect and restore rivers. In doing so, the Alliance builds, supports, and unites a strong network of local watershed guardian organizations. Through our outreach and education, the Alliance works to develop an understanding of watershed values, conditions, problems and solutions, and to communicate this understanding to decision-makers and citizens through personal outreach, publications, and electronic mediums.

The Alabama Water Agenda is a proactive, citizen-driven campaign for improving water policy in Alabama. The Agenda targets the biggest threats to our waters by ensuring lasting protections through improved state policy.

The Alabama Rivers Alliance is privately funded and all of our work is accomplished with the financial support of people like you. Please donate today.
