Alabama Rivers Alliance Programs
The mission of the Alabama Rivers Alliance is to protect and restore state rivers through water quality and quantity policy advocacy, restoration planning, grassroots organizing, and watershed education in order to achieve clean and healthy watershed ecosystems, healthy people, strong economies, and a functioning democratic system of government in Alabama.
The Alliance works to achieve its mission through three programs:
The Cahaba Lilly
Through its Flowing Waters Program the Alliance promotes natural flow regimes in order to ensure healthy ecosystems. The Alliance strongly believes that water is a precious resource that must be shared wisely by upstream, downstream, and in-stream stakeholders. The Alliance seeks to protect and restore water quantity through sustainable water supplies, water withdrawal policies, in-stream flow policies, and improvement of hydropower and non-hydropower dam operations.
Through its Watershed Leadership Program the Alliance works to grow the capacity of Alabama citizens to protect and restore rivers. In doing so, the Alliance builds, supports, and unites a strong network of local watershed guardian organizations. Through our outreach and education, the Alliance works to develop an understanding of watershed values, conditions, problems and solutions, and to communicate this understanding to decision-makers and citizens through personal outreach, publications, and electronic mediums.
