Flowing Waters

by Netcorps Admin last modified February 13, 2008 12:53 PM

The Alliance's goal through the Flowing Rivers program is to promote natural flow regimes that protect riverine ecosystems.

Through its Water Supplies Stewardship Project the Alliance is advocating for the responsible use and management of our water resources.  The creation of a state-wide comprehensive instream flow policy including water withdrawal permitting system would provide basic mechanisms for protecting water quantity in Alabama.

As water quantity continues to be a local, regional, state, and national concern, the Alliance is working to ensure that instream and downstream uses of our waters are considered and that fair allocation of water is maintained. The Alliance continues to monitor new developments in the Tri-State Water Wars in the Alabama-Coosa-Tallapoosa (ACT) and Appalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint (ACF) river basins shared with Florida and Georgia. We will continue to advocate for better water conservation and efficiency programs and monitor new proposals for water supply development projects.

Through our Responsible Hydropower Project the Alliance advocates for responsible operation of private and public hydropower dams to balance power and non-power needs and ensure compliance with environmental regulations. While hydropower generation is only a small part of power generation in Alabama, the impacts from poorly operated dams can harm riverine ecosystems and fisheries. By participating in relicensing processes, advocating for better policy, and collaborating with agencies and stakeholders, the Alliance believes that better hydropower operations can improve the health of many of Alabama's waters with minimal cost to operators and their customers.
