Healthy Watersheds
The goal of the Healthy Watersheds program is to improve water quality in Alabama's waters.
Through the Clean Waters Project, the Alliance advocates for effective implementation of the Clean Water Act and other environmental laws such as the National Environmental Policy Act. This project includes advocacy for improvement in ADEM and EPA policies and regulations involving the Clean Water Act and monitoring activities of Clean Water Act programs such as the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permitting program.
The Alliance seeks to restore Alabama's waters through our Watershed Restoration Initiative. The Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) program develops restoration goals for water-quality impaired streams. The Alliance reviews new TMDLs and seeks to assist local grassroots groups and citizens in the implementation of approved TMDLs.
The Alliance also helps groups and citizens identify and initiate stream restoration projects to improve the structure, function, and habitat aspects of a stream.
