Alabama Scenic River Trail CAHABA RIVER FESTIVAL

by Katie Shaddix last modified May 17, 2010 11:02 AM

Come join us in Centreville , on the banks of the Cahaba River , June 11th , 12th & 13th, when we explore the wild beauty of the Cahaba River . The Cahaba is probably the most unique river in Alabama . It has no dams on it , which few rivers in the entire United States can say that , and it has the rare Cahaba Lily .

We plan to park in the City Park of Centreville . The City is in the process of building a campground in their park . We will be the first to use it ! The camping will be semi-primitive . Bathrooms will be Port-O-Lets and showers will be our portable ones . Ground fires are permitted in the fire rings , or you can bring a BBQ grill (none in park , yet)  or an outdoor fireplace .

Saturday Morning , we will put in , in the Refuge and come back to camp . This section is about 11 miles long and has shoals and some minor white water . You will need to pick your way thru the rocks and find the Vees . This section also has most of the lilies . I suggest you bring a boat that you don't mind getting scratched on the bottom , because you will be banging into and dragging over , some rocks , now and again .  We will take out at our camp .

Sunday morning we put in at camp and go downstream from there . Since we passed the Fall Line , the river changes completely . It is now a sandy , gravelly river , with a strong current . No rocks , no shoals , just beautiful sandbars , scattered everywhere . Any type boat is safe on this stretch . This trip will be about 13 miles long , due to the lack of takeouts along the way . That may sound like a lot , but in the swift current it won't take to long .

And as a , ahem , a , a , side note , Centreville is a dry town . I talked to the Mayor and He said discretion is the word of the day . Its okay to drink in the Park , but please be discrete . No dancing on the tables , etc , ,,,  Seriously , I told him  we have never had a problem with anyone , and don't expect we ever will.

At the same time we are camping in the Park , that Saturday is the ' Wild About Our Refuge ' Festival . Since we will be floating most of Saturday , we might miss it , but maybe we can catch part of it , that evening .
Some of the Lilies have started to bloom , hopefully they will still be blooming when we come thru .

Some of the shoals we will encounter on Saturdays float trip . Most of these shoals have an easy way around them , but a few of them , we will have to find our way thru . It will be a bit of a challenge ! On Saturdays float , be prepared to get wet . Its in June , so if you do get wet , it will probably be refreshing .

This event is to be a simple one . We will supply the camp , coffee and breakfast in the morning . You will supply the other meals .
Because it is a no frills  camp out and float trips we are only charging $35.00 a head for it .  Can't beat that price !!

The shuttles will be the buddy system . I'll have a flatbed trailer to load the boats on and we will pile up in as few cars as possible .

So come join us in exploring one of the few wild rivers left in the United States .

                                           What Else ??
The River Rats are heading for Mobile this June 9th . If you have ever daydreamed of taking your powerboat ALL the way down the river , nows your chance to make it happen ! So far its 6 pontoon boats definitely and a few maybes . About 24 people in all . The River Rats will camp and cook aboard their boats for the trip . The ASRT plans to help bring gas , and in order to bring attention to the lack of gas on the river , we are going to try and get a little press coverage . The River Rats being , well river rats , we had to lay down a few rules about when the press was around , no mooning the photographers , we had to define sober , (its that gray area between when the coffee runs out and the first beer comes out of the cooler) Seriously these are a bunch of fun loving guys who are also highly skilled Captains . You are in capable hands if you run the river with them.
