Day on the River: Saturday, June 19, 2010

Friends of the Locust Fork River is a non-profit organization in Blount County with the mission of preserving the beauty and natural integrity of the Locust Fork river and the lifestyle of the community surrounding it.

Day on the River (DOR) is our gift to the children of Blount County so that they may learn about the river, it’s inhabitants and grow up to be responsible stewards of our watershed. There is no fee.

DOR takes place at King’s Bend on the banks of the Locust Fork River on hwy 79/231 just north of Cleveland, Alabama.  Stations set up by 8:00, families arrive between 8 and 8:30 and the welcome program begins at 8:45.  Lunch is provided for children, parents, station staff and volunteers.  The day ends at 3:30 though most station activities are finished by 3pm.

Activity Stations are the heart event.  Environmental groups provide fun, learning-while–doing activities for rotating groups of children.  The activities are geared for 3rd-6th grade but usually there are a few children older and younger following along with their parents as this is truly a family event.  Organizations already committed to this year's event include  Cahaba River Society, Alabama Rivers Alliance, Birmingham Canoe Club, McWane Science Center, Ruffner Mtn Nature Center, Alabama Dept. of Conservation and Natural Resources, the Ground Water Festival Program and several environmental educators from Blount county.

 Volunteers needed!

Let me know what job you'd like to do:

Be a Shepherd with the children
   Greeting and parking
   Registration
   River safety monitor
   Central station-FLFR booth
   Set up or clean up
   Help stations with their activities
   Lunch-preparation, serving or clean up

Do you know of others who might be interested in volunteering? Please let me know. We'd also be interested in having high school age kids/older scouts be volunteers.-preferably 15+ years old.

I hope many of you can help-we hope to have at least 150 children on-site with their families.  It takes about 50 volunteers to pull this off.
