Want a little excitement as summer starts to fade? Here's something that won't leave you drenched or sweating, but still gets the job done. This week, the Alabama Rivers Alliance and the Alabama Environmental Council are hosting the "Wild & Scenic Film Festival," the largest movie event of its kind in the United States. The touring production, based in California, takes place Thursday at the Harbert Center downtown. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Described as a film festival for activists by activists, the event explores topics such as wilderness preservation and bioengineering, and it places viewers in some of the world's wildest rivers and atop its highest peaks. Tickets are $10, www.alabamarivers.org. Also, available at the door. Kathy Kemp's column runs Sundays in The Birmingham News.
