What are the biggest threats to Alabama's rivers?
A list of the six biggest threats to Alabama's rivers and what you can do to help.
- Muddy runoff from urban and rural areas is the leading cause of pollution and flooding in Alabama's rivers. Sediment (dirt) is the most common pollutant associated with runoff.
- Poorly planned development has negative effects on Alabama's rivers and Alabama's citizens. While it increases pollution in our waters and decreases habitat for our wildlife, it also negatively impacts our economy and quality of life.
- ยท Taking water from a river without leaving enough water for those downstream, whether due to increasing demand for water supply from local or out-of-state entities, is harmful to rivers because too little water in a river affects water cleanliness, drinking water supplies, recreation, navigation, and wildlife.
- Confusion, conflict, and inaction among the multiple state agencies charged with protecting Alabama's water.
- Lack of laws protecting Alabama's rivers and a lack of enforcement for the laws that do exist
- Lack of funding for existing programs that protect Alabama's rivers
